Artist Statement

"My work explores the relationships between color and space, with an architectural dialogue.

These dynamics live through the surface, or space, examine and embrace the dialectic monumentality of the tradition, with abstract expressions that extend beyond the surface and/ or surrounding the work area."

Jorge Montante

Biography

Montante’s art is permeated with a strong Latin-American heritage of color, architecture and history, yet transpires a great deal of abstract and expressionistic internationality. He has exhibited at numerous galleries and public spaces in Mexico, and North America. He is represented in private collections in Mexico, U.S.A and Canada. He was born in Veracruz, Mexico in the mid 60’s.

As an architectural trained artist and designer, he began working in his hometown, just to later expand to Mexico City. Always an artist since young age, he starts to develop gallery quality artwork at his hometown Catholic University and Open Workshops in Veracruz, c.1985. He exhibited works throughout Mexico and then left to travel and continue his studies in the U.S.A., settling in Chicago, IL where he met and worked with many other artists since 1992.

Currently works with two Art Studios in Chicago and Southern Wisconsin, where he produces work in painting, sculpture, mixcolography, block printing, engraving, ceramics, and design.

Art Notes

Montante's artwork manifests a careful timed arranged sequence of color and shapes, architectural statements make the canvas, basic constructions with golden rules overfill the artwork, milling lines and proportions cut throughout, but the color, the color is the presence that is honored.

The color overtakes the surrounding space, spills out of the artwork with architectural monoliths that are offered to the spectator as found archaeology of a vivid but far away past, without excuses for size or position. The framework stands and the shapes harmonize, while color imposes, at the same time textures dances and jumps, up-close and animated, but distant as well, as a found treasure excavated from a lost pre-hispanic city.
